In the final moments of Transamerica, the bond between Bree and Toby reaches a remarkably breaking point at her parents' house in Arizona. After his grandparents' warm reception, Toby goes to Bree's bedroom at night, not knowing that they are relatives, and makes an attempt to seduce her.

To prevent that from happening, Bree has to disclose the entire truth: she is not just a transgender woman but also the biological father of Toby. The admission is monumental for Toby, who responds with rage and revulsion and runs out of the house, all shaken up. After this painful experience, the two go their separate ways: Bree goes back to Los Angeles and, though it hurts her to lose her newly discovered son, she finally goes through sex reassignment surgery. The operation turned out to be successful, but the outer change did not take away her inner solitude or the feeling of guilt due to the rupture with Toby.

Bree's situation is rather straightforward: the girl turns into a gay porn actor, which brings about a drastic change in his identity - far from the unstable and angry one he was during the road trip. The separation of the two seems to be permanent, until one fine evening, Toby unexpectedly turns up at Bree's place. Since the operation is done, Toby wants to know about the surgery and the journey that Bree went through, revealing a more mature and less confrontational side of himself.

This encounter is the beginning of a silent yet genuine reconciliation. The past is not wiped away, nor are all the wounds healed, but finally, Bree and Toby manage to see each other for who they really are, even if it is just for a moment. The movie thus ends on a fragile equilibrium in which the notions of identity, truth, and family ties have to breathe and grow in a new and imperfect way.
