The M3GAN spin-off disappears from release schedules: Is the flop to blame?

What happened to the M3GAN spin-off? In May, it was announced that the saga dedicated to the robot doll with long blonde hair would have an erotic-themed spin-off. However, apart from initial enthusiasm, news about the project became increasingly scarce over time, and silence finally completely enveloped the film.

SOULM8TE's theatrical debut was scheduled for January 9, 2026, but today the film has been removed from Universal's release calendar. Is this a postponement or has the project been definitively shelved? The SOULM8TE project seems to have sunk after the flop of M3GAN 2.0, but only at Universal: it seems, in fact, that the film will be sold to other studios.

The M3GAN sequel was completely different from what fans expected: the first chapter saw the android doll manipulate a child and kill anyone who crossed her path. In a second film, a resurrection and revenge against her own creator were expected, but the horror film quickly transformed into a fight between sentient dolls, completely losing its original characterization. A flop that may have had real repercussions on the artificial intelligence saga that Universal was exploring, considering the cancellation of SOULM8TE.

The spin-off might still have another chance if it is acquired by another studio: the film focuses on a grieving husband, played by David Rysdahl, who hires an artificial intelligence companion whose face will be portrayed by Lily Sullivan. Similar concepts have already been explored in films like Companion or Subservience: we will see if Kate Dolan will have the opportunity to do so in a more horror (and certainly erotic) tone in SOULM8TE.
