Sankranti may be a big deal for the Telugu movie scene, but for Tamil cinema its just as massive. It's traditionally the time when the big boys square off and this year was no different. Fans were all a buzz waiting for Vijay's Jana Nayagan to light up the box office, but just as that film suddenly dropped out of the running, all eyes shifted to Sivakarthikeyan's big ticket project: Parasakthi.
The Hype vs Reality
This film had all the ingredients for a real blockbuster: a director in Sudha Kongara who's known for making cult classics like Irudhi Suttru and Soorarai Pottru, plus Jayam Ravi menacing up the place as the bad guy, and the lovely Sreeleela playing the female lead ... and on top of all that a story that was steeped in old Tamil charm and pride. So naturally the buzz was that high. Just a shame, that the final product couldn't quite live up to its huge promises.
Critical Reception and Media Spin
Tamil critics were initially super enthusiastic about the film handing out 3 star + ratings. And as it happened, since there weren't any "bigger" Sankranti releases, it got to play at loads of cinemas
But because the plot was all about the 1960s Tamil protests against the Hindi language - something really close to the heart of Tamil people - nobody was too keen to write it off as a flop. PR teams and bits of the media kept plugging away at the hype, and in fact even faked up some box office numbers to make it look like Parasakthi was still going strong.
The Final Numbers: A Financial Disaster
As the theatrical run concludes and the dust settles, the real figures have emerged, painting a grim picture for the producers:
| Metric | Details |
|---|---|
| Budget | ₹150 Crores |
| Worldwide Gross | ₹85 Crores |
| Distributor Share | Less than ₹50 Crores |
By its third week, though, the film was basically done for, with Jeeva's Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil the real winner at the box office. And in the end? Parasakthi managed to recover only a third of its costs from cinema ticket sales. and even including the cash from streaming and tv syndication, the producers are still staring at a big loss.. And despite all the clever PR spin, at the end of the day, Parasakthi was just a bad box office foray.
