Disney’s Zootopia 2 has officially cemented its status as a global box office juggernaut, shattering records and rewriting the playbook for Hollywood imports in the Asian market. The animated sequel grossed a staggering $630 million in China alone, marking the highest-ever performance for a U.S. production in the territory.
China’s New Box Office King
In a recent fiscal first-quarter statement to investors, Disney leadership confirmed that the sequel is now the highest-grossing American film in Chinese history. Disney CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston highlighted that the film’s success extends beyond the silver screen, serving as a "major driver" for the brand’s interconnected ecosystem.
"The box office success of our brands also drives value across our interconnected businesses," the statement noted, citing increased viewership for related titles on Disney+ and heightened global interest in consumer products.
Franchise Synergy and Park Attendance
The "Zootopia" shingle has now generated a monstrous $1.8 billion in total receipts since the franchise’s inception. Notably, the brand's footprint is most visible at Shanghai Disneyland, where the Zootopia-themed land remains one of the park’s most trafficked areas.
A Trillion-Dollar 2025
The year 2025 has been a "dream year" for theatrical exhibitors. Zootopia 2 joins Lilo & Stitch and Avatar: Fire and Ash as one of only three films to cross the billion-dollar mark this year. Despite this dominance, the global crown remains with the local breakout hit Ne Zha 2, which concluded 2025 as the highest-grossing film of all time in China with a massive $2.12 billion haul.
