The recent Malayalam film creating a sensation is Sarvam Maya. Lead actor Nivin Pauly makes a triumphant return with this movie, scoring a major hit. Directed as a horror-comedy with a budget of ₹30 crore, it has gone on to gross an impressive ₹150 crore. The film is now available on Hotstar, streaming in both its original language and Telugu. Is it worth your time? Let’s find out.
The Plot
Prabendu (Nivin Pauly) is a young man from an orthodox family who does not believe in God. He resists following in the footsteps of his father and brother, who are priests, and instead dreams of becoming a world-class guitarist. While pursuing his passion and performing on stage, unexpected circumstances force him to return to his hometown.
To make ends meet, he reluctantly begins performing pujas and rituals alongside his brother-in-law, Ramesh (Aju Varghese). During one such ritual, he frees a child from a possessing spirit. Following this, a female ghost (Riya Shibu) begins to haunt him—though she is visible and audible only to him. Having no memory of her past or how she died, Prabendu nicknames her "Delulu." The story follows the changes Delulu brings to Prabendu’s life and the mystery behind her forgotten past.
Analysis
Malayalam cinema often shines through simple emotions and subtle comedy rather than complex plots, and Sarvam Maya is no exception. In a refreshing twist, the ghost is more afraid of people than they are of her. Lacking both her memory and supernatural powers, she shares a bond with the hero, who is equally timid.
While categorized as a horror-comedy, the film lacks genuine scares. Instead, the audience is encouraged to fall in love with the ghost character. The dialogues regarding love, trust, and relationships are deeply resonant. The first half moves at a brisk pace, though the second half feels slightly repetitive as it treads familiar ground. However, the chemistry between the leads and the "sweet" nature of the ghost encounters keep it engaging. While the climax offers a unique flashback, the resolution feels a bit rushed.
A central conflict arises when Delulu falls for Prabendu, while he is already in love with a girl named Saadhya. This love triangle leads to some of the film’s best emotional beats, ending on a poignant note regarding the nature of Delulu's feelings.
Performances & Technicals
Nivin Pauly delivers a stellar performance, grounding the film’s humor and heart. Riya Shibu is a revelation; her portrayal of the "delusional" ghost is adorable and has quickly made her a fan favorite. The supporting cast is equally strong, with no character feeling out of place—even the family dog is integrated into the story delightfully.
Technically, the film is polished. While the Telugu dubbing is solid, the translated song lyrics feel slightly off-beat. The background music complements the tone perfectly, and the cinematography captures the lush beauty of Kerala with a pleasing aesthetic.
Verdict
If you are usually too scared to watch horror movies, have no fear—Sarvam Maya is perfectly safe. Throughout the film, you’ll likely find yourself wondering how a ghost could be so charming rather than frightening. It is a heartwarming, family-friendly watch that is easily the best option for your weekend.
Note- As of Jan 30, 2026, Sarvam Maya is available on JioHotstar. If you are watching in Telugu, the dubbing is great, but we recommend the original Malayalam audio with subtitles for the best musical experience!
