Who better than Macaulay Culkin to share their thoughts on a Christmas movie deemed "questionable" by many - the 1988 blockbuster "Die Hard". Home Alone & Home Alone 2: Lost in New York star Macaulay Culkin has made a name for himself in the holiday movie scene
And he's the man we want to weigh in on this age-old debate: is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Culkin gives a deadpan response, "No, it's not. Don't even try to contradict me," he quipped in an interview with Mythical Kitchen. "It's set during the Christmas season, but if it were on St. Patrick's Day, it would still work. However, you can't watch Home Alone on Memorial Day. It just doesn't work that way." a straight to the point answer that leaves little room for argument.
Culkin jokingly added, "These days I'm kinda the Godfather of Christmas, so I get a say in this matter". But in all seriousness, his answer could well put to rest the endless debate about whether the 1988 Bruce Willis film is a Christmas movie or not. That's not the only opinion, however: Elf star Zooey Deschanel has gone on record saying yes, Die Hard is indeed a Christmas movie and it's even her fave holiday film. Culkin did go on record saying he's not totally ruling out a potential Home Alone sequel.
"It would have to be perfect," Culkin says would be the only way he'd go back to playing Kevin. He shared a bit of an idea for the script too: "I'm either wed or divorced, raising my kid on my own, I'm working hard and somehow not paying enough attention. My kid gets all resentful and I get locked out and it turns out he's setting traps for me - my son won't let me in." Culkin ran with the idea for a hypothetical Home Alone sequel. Chris Columbus, however, the director of the two Home Alone films from 1990 & 1992, disagrees - "I think it's a mistake to try to recapture magic from 35 years ago. Let's just leave it alone". Meanwhile, the very house from Home Alone is set to get a renovation to return it to its film appearance in the months to come.
